=1) My favourite ALW show & love story, the Phantom of The Opera! This amazing show has all the ingredients for a fantastic stage show: a compelling storyline, a beautiful score & memorable songs, an exquisite & unique set design, characters you can relate to with a moral at the end, spectacle scenes featuring a crashing chandelier, a deformed yet seductive & sympathetic murderer & a gliding boat! Team Phantom forever!
=1) The most moving show I've ever seen, Les Miserables! This story of redemption, love & war are amazing, also showing you don't need an elaborate set or spectacle to create an amazing story filled with some of the most memorable characters & songs(Jean Valjean, Fantine, Eponine, Javert!) based on the classic novel created by Victor Hugo set in the 1832 Revolution in Paris.
3) Fantasy girl power show & prequel/midquel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked! The show is amazing filled with catchy tunes, elaborate sets & costume & a gripping story about the friendship of a misunderstood green woman who eventually becomes the infamous Wicked Witch of the West & a vapid, blonde vain woman who eventually becomes Glinda the Good Witch, also leaving the question to the audience: Who's really the wicked one here?
4) Billy Elliot, set in the '80s during the Miners Strike, about a boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, while his widowed father wants him to become a boxer. This gripping story featuring amazing music by singer Elton John really moved me & made me feel like toe-tapping on the way out the theatre!
5) Willy Russell's classic Blood Brothers! This show is just fantastic & left me in tears, following the story of twin brothers separated at birth & being raised in 2 completely different class systems & shows how it can affect others in positive & most of the time, negative ways, during the recession in the 80's & how fate, superstition, class & love can cause tragedy. One added bonus was that & had to learn about for my GCSE exam this year, which to me was heaven in learning about something & have a passion for!
6) Rent, about a group of Bohemians living in New York who are all having troubles in their life, involving terminal illness or love, but showing they'll stick together. I saw a regional production of it a year ago which was good & the film wasn't that bad, but was nothing compared to the final Broadway performance. With memorable songs & empathetic characters, this show is definitely a classic!
7) Another classic ALW show, Evita, about the life of Argentinian Eva Peron & her rise to political power over Argentina, while being married to the president of their country & embarking on her early life in aspiring to become an actress & her charity work. With memorable music & a classic song which made Elaine Page a theatrical legend, the show itself has become a classic in the making as a biographical musical about a very amazing woman who changed Argentina while in power, with her premature death gripping the nation.
8) Another love classic story, which made Lea Salonga a famous Broadway legend, Miss Saigon! \Based on the opera, Madame Butterfly & set during the Fall of Saigon during the Vietnam war, an American soldier Chris meets Kim, a young woman living in a brothel & wanting a better life away from the war, & quickly falls for her. However, since he abandons her, she hopes for him to return, as he inconveniently gave her a son during the night they met. Now married 3 years later, Chris has to make a choice for making a fresh start with his wife or reuniting with Kim & his son. This show is just beautiful, with amazing music & characters which is a musical classic.
9) The illegally pink & girly show, Legally Blonde! Blonde sorority girl Elle Woods tries to prove to her pompous boyfriend she can be serious after he dumps her, by going to Harvard Law School with him, despite the fact he already has a new girlfriend. However, with the help of the sweetest guy ever Emmett & salon woman Paulette, she proves she can become a lawyer, with determination & perseverance. This show is so funny with memorable characters you may remember from the 2001 film with Reese Witherspoon, with a load of euphemisms & is perfect for mothers & daughters to see.
10) The most hilarious show filled with mad scientist, pan-sexual drag queens, The Rocky Horror Show! The music is classic, featuring one of the most well-known dances ever, the Time Warp, as well as hilarious & memorable characters which make you fit in, if your'e a misfit or an underdog & helps people express themselves with funny tradition audience participations & dressing up as various & eccentric characters!
